Embarrassed by the confession of an alleged drug dealer claiming that a police officer used to sell seized drugs to him, Goa police has asked its Anti-Narcotic Cell (ANC) to inspect all the narcotics seized by them in the last three years.

Deputy inspector general of police Ravindra Yadav told reporters yesterday that ANC has been directed to probe the drug seizures from 2006 to 2009.

The Goa state police claims to have seized drugs worth Rs3.31-crore in last three years with the catch for 2008-09 touching Rs1 crore mark.

"The ANC superintendent of police has been asked to conduct the probe. We will check all the drugs with us," Yadav said. An Israeli suspected drug peddler, Atala, had confessed on camera that police inspector Ashish Shirodkar was selling him drugs that were stolen from ANC custody. Those drugs were sealed by the court after various raids.

"He gets a lot of drugs from Mapusa court. This officer tries to go inside into the locker, steal all the drugs from there and give me," Atala was seen saying on the tape, which was aired by local channel, Prudent Media, last week. Five policemen were suspended after the expose including Shirodkar.

Goa police are also inquiring into the mystery of substance seized as drugs during the raid turning out to be medicinal products.

Police sub-inspector Punaji Gawas has been given showcause notice after the heroin seized by him during a raid in February, this year, turned out to be acetaminophen and caffeine.
