The agitation against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant has turned into a Tamil Nadu vs India issue even as the opposition to the Rs13,000 crore project is getting weaker by the day.

All major political parties in the state such as the AIADMK, the DMK, the DMDK, the Congress and the BJP have made it clear that Tamil Nadu badly needs the 900 Mw power the two plants of Kudankulam would yield to the state grid. Most of the districts in the state face three to four hours of load shedding even during the North East Monsoon which is in full flow now.

Though the AIADMK and the DMK are yet to condemn the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), the NGO spearheading the 104-day-old agitation, leaders in both the parties have asked the Centre and the Department of Atomic Energy to allay the fears of the local community.

Faced with the ignominy of their agitation fizzling out in the coming weeks, PMANE on Sunday shot a lengthy letter to chief minister Jayalalithaa requesting her to take the leadership of the anti-Kudankulam nuclear plant agitation.

“The union government and the DAE are trying to isolate Tamil Nadu by spreading canards and rumours with the assistance of the intelligence agencies and the media,” said the letter signed by Pushoparayan, SP Udaya Kumar and other prominent leaders of PMANE.

The only political parties that have come out openly against KNPP are the PMK, the MDMK and the VCK. All these parties survive by riding piggy back on the AIADMK or the DMK.

“None of these parties is bothered about the well being of the state. These are perpetual opposition parties which do not want any development in the state other than the fringe benefits they corner as the allies of major outfits,” said a political commentator in Chennai.

Sources in the DAE told DNA that a probe is being held soon about the results of surveys published by certain NGOs around Kalpakkam.

“Intelligence agencies have come across instances like cancer patients being brought from other areas and made to stay around Kalpakkam to create an impression that the area is full of such patients,” said a DAE scientist.
