Issuing a warning to the Congress-led UPA government, Anna Hazare on Friday said he would campaign against them in the five poll-bound states if the government fails to pass a strong Lokpal bill in the winter session of parliament.
He alleged that the government is trying to weaken the proposed Lokpal bill by bringing it in ‘several pieces’ as separate public grievances redressal bill, judicial accountability bill and whistle-blower protection bill, which have several shortcomings.
The 74-year-old activist looked fresh and fit as he broke his 19-day maun vrat (vow of silence) saying ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ at the Rajghat around 7 am. He reached the national capital on Thursday night to attend the meeting with the parliamentary standing committee on Lokpal bill.
“I will go and ask people not to vote for the Congress if the bill is not passed,” Hazare said, pointing out that he had earlier decided not to take the name of any party in the upcoming assembly elections, but changed his stand after seeing that the government isn’t serious and is cutting the Jan Lokpal bill into several weak pieces.
He said the Centre should follow the Uttarakhand Lokayukta bill, but instead it is doing just the opposite. He said he has no issues if a separate Judicial Accountability Bill is brought in, but claimed that the government has come out with a ‘weak’ one that does not mention anything about corruption in judiciary.
Hazare said if the government doesn’t pass the bill, he will sit on fast in Delhi for three days and then go to the poll-bound states where he would sit on dharna for a day. The team would also campaign in those states, he added.
The septuagenarian, however, made it clear that he would not campaign for the BJP. He also brushed allegations against his team members stating that “people throw stones at trees which bear fruits”.
On the restructuring of his core committee, Hazare said a constitution is being written for the committee, after which the present one will be dissolved and new one formed by giving representation to people from all walks of society.
