In a major setback to the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh, the party's state unit president D Srinivas lost the bye-election from Nizamabad Urban Assembly constituency today.
BJP candidate Y Laksmi Narayana defeated Srinivas by a margin of 12,000 votes.
Earlier in the 2009 Assembly elections, Srinivas had lost from the Nizamabad Urban constituency to Lakshmi Narayana.
The bypoll in Nizamabad, alongwith 11 other constituency in Telangana region, was necessitated as the sitting MLAs had quit their posts in support of separate Telangana statehood demand.
