The farmers' outfits in Andhra Pradesh, with the support of political parties, are gearing up to launch an agitation against the Krishna water tribunal's award, which they claim, will adversely affect them.

An all-party meet will be convened in Vijayawada on Sunday to decide the future course of action on the Tribunal's award.

Uniting under the banner of Krishna Delta Parirakshana Samithi, the political and farmer organisations discussed the pros and cons of the award on Friday.

The samithi felt that the award, announced on December 30, is a boon for Karnataka and bane for Andhra Pradesh. Under the tribunal's award in the decades-old dispute related to sharing of Krishna waters, Andhra Pradesh will get  the maximum share of water.

Share of Karnataka and Maharashtra, where Krishna originates, has also been enhanced. Now, Andhra Pradesh will get 1,001 TMC, Karnataka 911 TMC and Maharashtra 666 TMC of water from the river. Earlier allocation was 811 TMC for AP, 734 TMC for Karnataka and 585 TMC for Maharashtra.

The tribunal also allowed increase in height of Almati Dam in Karnataka to 524 metres from earlier 519. The farmers' groups have opposed the increase in dam height, claiming it will lead to low flow of water in Krishna below the dam.

If the dam height is raised, the fate of farmers in at least half a dozen AP districts will be in the hands of Karnataka government, Samithi leaders said.

"Karnataka will definitely restrict the flow of water to downstream of Almati to supply more water to its farmers. Unless, we fight for our rights, lakhs of acres of land will become desert and the people of AP will face starvation," they said, adding that the state should move the Supreme Court.
