Amnesty International team meets Omar Abdullah

An Amnesty International team, on a week-long visit to Kashmir valley after 20 years, today met chief minister Omar Abdullah who asserted his government was fully committed to protect human rights of the people.
     
Allowing an Amnesty team to visit Kashmir was a clear indication that his government believed in transparency, he told the two-member team.
     
"We realise the government has wider responsibilities towards the people. Therefore, the commitment to protect human rights is much stronger and unwavering," Abdullah said.
    
Whenever any security force jawan was found guilty of human rights violation, he had been brought to book, the chief minister told the team.
     
Recently, a new culture of stone pelting had emerged in the valley but with the cooperation of public, the youths were persuaded to desist from such an unacceptable activity, he said.
     
Whether it was a case of militancy or law and order, the government was adopting a legal and judicial route to deal with the accused, Abdullah said.
     
Giving instances of his government issuing passports to genuine citizens, Omar said he had directed the police to issue NOCs to kith and kin of even dreaded militants in case they were not involved in subversive activities.

The Union government has allowed Amnesty representatives to visit the valley after a hiatus of 20 years.
      
BJ Batra and Gopala Krishnan, the members of the team, had aleady met several separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference.
