ÿ-Devika Chaturvedi
Ka karoon sajni aye na baalam…
Tadapat beeti mori un bin ratiyaanÿ-
Nisdin mohe birhaa sataye
Yaad aawat jab unki batiyaan
Aaye na baalam

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan composed this song while mourning his wife's death. A friend narrated this story to me once. It may be apocryphal, but one wants to believe it because with such a cultivated voice the pathos that Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan evoked after he lost his wife and lover Allah Jiwai is unsurpassed. But can anyone match this feeling where a mere musical instrument is not above the music of the soul?

So be prepared to listen to the same magic that was once created by this thumri replacing it with new emotion by many maestros of music in Ahmedabad. The 32nd Saptak Music Festival was announced that is going to feature 130 artistes spread over 15 sessions. Supposedly India's biggest Indian Classical Music fest, it will span 13 days ushering in the New Year from January 1 to 13. Saptak School of Music Annual Festival - 2012 - 'Visarata Vadyo'will be held at Amrut Mody School of Management in Ahmedabad, opposite IIM-A. The festival is being organized in two parts. The first part of the festival will be from January 1 to 13 January 2012 and the second part on February 12, 2012.

In the vocal section the festival covers the entire spectrum of classical forms from the stylised classicism of Dhrupad to Khayal and Thumri. The morning sessions, included to enable the listeners to savour the morning ragas, will also be a part of this year's musical feast. The dance form Kathak which combines classical music woven around the talas of the North Indian system, will be presented by the living legend of Kathak, Pt Birju Maharaj.
