In its attempt to make the city plastic-free, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to manufacture and sell disposable cups, made out of waste paper collected from the city.

The company will use waste paper collected by AMC to manufacture the cups. "These cups will be given to tea vendors across the city, who usually use plastic cups, which is hazardous to the environment" said Dr. Patel.
Giving details about the new venture, Patel said that AMC wants to end the use of plastic in the city in several forms. "Apart from tea vendors, we will also encourage common man to use the paper cups for social functions.
Now a days, thousands of plastic cups are used during several social functions every day" said Patel, who has already started negotiations with interested parties.
According to the proposed plan, AMC will give waste paper collected from the city and brought to the dumping station at Pirana. After weighing the waste paper, it will be given to the contractor, who will make disposable cups out of it.
These cups will be either distributed to the tea vendors or sold in the open market. "We will seize plastic cups from the tea stall owners, and ask them to buy disposable cups. They will also accept this initiative, as we will keep the price at par with plastic cups" said Patel.
According to him, tea vendors buy the plastic cups at Rs 20 per 100 cups. But, the cost of paper cups comes to Rs 40 per 100 cups, but it will be sold to tea stall owners at the same rate as plastic cups. "To compensate for the loss, we will invite tea companies to put their logo on the cup, for which we will charge them thus generating revenue to nullify the difference" said Patel.
Along with the advertisements in the form of logos, AMC will put its own logo on each cup. AMC will also have a contract with the tea vendors to return the used cups, which will be again recycled and sold to them.
Apart from the paper cups, AMC is planning to recycle and use plastic bags seized from the factories during raids. "We are in talks with companies who will use this plastic to make dustbins and other plastic vessels used by AMC. Since we are providing the raw material, we don't have to pay anything to them."
