Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is taking the transparency issue one step further. The civic body has decided to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the estate department. This would be the first time that CCTV camera is being installed in any civic body office.

"We want to uproot corruption and change the image of the department," said Anil Patel, chairman of civic body’s estate management and town planning committee.

Sources in the department said that there are certain faces frequently seen in the estate department's office who are neither municipal servants nor the members of the elected wing. These people work as agents and are the main source of corruption in the administration, said the source.

The CCTV cameras will be first installed in the central zone office of the estate department. Thereafter they will be installed in other zones as well. Patel added that it would take time to implement this system as certain procedures are to be followed for purchasing the equipment.

In order to keep tabs on the people visiting the town planning officer, a register for visitors have already been placed in the central zone office on Monday.

However, some visitors refused to make an entry in the register. "We have asked the employees to put the name of the visitors along with the time," said Patel.

Patel added that certain people, involved in malpractice, loiter around all day in the office and are often misidentified as AMC officials by people coming to meet senior officials. "Such things can not be tolerated anymore," said Patel.

Sources in the department believe that such a system would help the civic body to plug the loopholes in the department along with breaking the secrete bond between the corrupt officials and the people with vested interest.
