The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials will now be at your doorsteps to collect professional tax. The civic body is on a drive to identify unregistered professionals in the city, and in case you furnish the pretext of not knowing the procedure, they will abreast you of the Professional Tax Pay Camps, whereby officials will be at your doorsteps to collect tax.
The AMC officials have managed to collect professional tax of more than Rs10 crore in the last two and a half months. They have identified unregistered professional in two categories, businessmen and the service class. While the officials have tracked down around 3,779 unregistered businessmen, they came across 564 unregistered service class professionals during the period.
"We recovered Rs74 lakh from the newly registered business professionals while total tax procured from the business professional tax payers has reached Rs1.40 crore. On the other hand, tax collected from the newly registered service-class professionals has touched Rs1.88 crore, while total tax collected from the service class (new and old) has touched Rs9.41 crore," said a senior official of the revenue department of the AMC.
For citizen's convenience, the AMC has also started organising Professional Tax Pay Camps. So far, the AMC has organised three such camps for business associations, and it plans to organise similar ones with CAs' association, car accessory association, Bar association. "We request citizens to turn up at these camps, organised in their areas, to pay their tax," added the official.
Until last year, the responsibility to collect professional tax was vested with the state government. However, in last year's state budget, the responsibility was assigned to the municipal corporations. While it is easier for the service class to pay tax as it gets deducted from their salary, it is as good as a headache when it comes to business professionals, where bank transaction is involved. The state government has also authorised the AMC to increase professional tax for touching the Rs67 crore mark.
"Last year, we collected Rs47.1 crore as professional tax. This year, with new registered professional tax payers, we expect the figure to touch at least Rs67 crore," said the official.
