This Saturday, one can find schoolchildren dressed in scout uniforms standing at various junctions and managing traffic. In an initiative by the Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) and the school board of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, every first and third Saturday of the month, Scouts and Guides of AMC-run schools will be deployed at major junctions to manage traffic.

According to Lakhdhir Desai, administrative officer of AMC school board, the exercise will start with four junctions. "We have identified four junctions for the first batch. These are Town Hall, Naroda Patiya, Income Tax and Blind People's Association. Our Scout and Guides will be there as part of their service and training programme," said Desai.

They will participate in managing traffic with the help of traffic policemen. "Starting from December 3, our students will participate in traffic management exercise between 5 pm and 7 pm at these junctions," said Desai. Before participating in the traffic management programme, these students received two-day training given by traffic policemen at Children's Park on Sunday and Monday.

The Scout and Guides will also participate in cleanliness drive. From Tuesday, they will be involved in cleaning all the statutes of noted personalities in the city. "As part of their social responsibility and regular training, these Scout and Guides will clean the statutes on the last day of every month between 10 am and 12 noon, starting from Tuesday," said Desai. To boost their morale, AMC officials and corporators will remain present in the cleaning drive.
