The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), armed with its solid waste master plan, has serious intentions of becoming the first civic body in the country to treat 100% of its solid waste. The master plan, which is in its preparation stage, is being made so that the civic body can prepare a proper plan for collection and effective disposal of solid waste of the city.

Various interesting projects are being studied for this purpose and one such interesting project is of recycling the building debris waste for making floor tiles and bricks. With the amount of building debris waste generated in the city on a daily basis, the project of reusing the debris will help in treatment and reducing the amount of waste.

Speaking to DNA, Municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, "Presently, we generate 300-500 tonnes of debris waste everyday. We are planning to tie up with an agency under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, wherein it will be given the debris waste which it will recycle to make tiles and bricks." Also, it will be on revenue-sharing basis as AMC will provide land and the debris waste to the agency, while the agency will set up its own plant on the land to treat the waste.

The city at present generates 4,000 tonne solid waste, which is dumped at the Pirana dumping site. Also, presently there are two agencies which treat the solid waste. "But the treatment capacity of the two agencies is quite less as they treat around 500-600 tonne waste in a day, due to which we will soon see two more agencies which are in making which will treat 800-1,000 tonnes of solid waste in a day," stated Mohapatra. Moreover, AMC had signed MoU with 15 companies for treatment of solid waste, out of which, seven have been short listed and are going through evaluation stage.
