AMC health dept raids 19 bakeries

Is there beef tallow in the ghee you apply on your daily chapatti?

The answer will be in the affirmative if samples of vegetable ghee used in 19 bakeries test positive. After the Vejalpur police seized around 6000 kgs of beef tallow on Wednesday, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) health department inspected 19 bakeries on Wednesday.

In co-ordination with the police department, the AMC health department officials took samples from shops in Beharmpura, Mirzapur, Shahpur and Dani Limda. AMC's chief medical officer SP Kulkarni said the seized samples will be sent for laboratory tests.

If the samples test positive, we will confiscate all materials and also take away the license of the shop," said Kulkarni.

He said the inspections, done in conjunction with the police department, will continue. However, it will take a few more days before the sample results are ready.
