The ruling  party in the AMC has approved a proposal of five contractors of EWS housing amid opposition from the Congress and rise in cost of the project. The standing committee introduced minor changes in the proposal after considering it for a week.

The civic body had earlier awarded five contractors the contract to construct around 15,168 houses for the economic weaker section (EWS) of the society under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The total contract was divided into five packages and separate tenders were floated for each. Later, due to some 'technical reasons' the contractors had asked for an increment of 5% to 8% in the original tender price. They had also asked for reimbursement of price escalation in steel and cement. Now that the standing committee has agreed to these demands, the civic body will shell out additional Rs23.71 crore for the same project.

Besides, the BJP also agreed to extend the deadline by three months for completion of the project.

However, the ruling party has decided to retain 10% of the price of remaining work and take decision about the same after completion of the projects. Meanwhile, the civic body will invite fresh tenders for building 3,000 more EWS houses under JNNURM that were earlier to be constructed by Syntax Industries and MS Khurana Engineering. The two firms are at present handling two packages.

The municipal commissioner had proposed to allot work of constructing 500 and 2,500 houses to Syntax Industries and MS Khurana Engineering respectively. But the standing committee disapproved the proposal and decided to invite fresh tenders for the same. The civic body will also carry out survey of damaged roads in the city. The members of the standing committee complained about roads being washed out during monsoon.

The civic body officials assured that a survey of damaged roads will be carried out and the contractor responsible for the work will
be compelled to resurface the roads. It should be noted that a contractor is liable to repair the roads that he has built for five years.
