Will the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders conduct a joint campaign with Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] leader and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar during the ongoing Bihar assembly elections?

Despite the campaigning for the elections’ first phase nearly ending, there is no answer to that question, and BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad refused to comment on that query.

“There is still a lot of time left in the six-phase assembly elections. Programmes are being drawn up for campaigning in the next phases,” he said.

Prasad claimed that the two parties were conducting “joint campaign” without sharing a common platform.

“BJP leaders including myself and Sushil Modi have been campaigning for JD(U) candidates, while JD(U) leaders have visited the constituencies where BJP candidates are contesting,” he added.

The party spokesperson scoffed at reports that the JD(U) was against BJP leader LK Advani campaigning in the elections for fear of losing its support among the Muslims, particularly in the aftermath of the Allahbad high court verdict on the Ayodhya dispute. “There is no truth in these reports. Advani is slated to address public meetings on October 19 for the first phase of polling,” Prasad said.

Notwithstanding the brave face put up by the BJP, the party appears beset with internal dissension. Quite a few Bihar-based BJP leaders have been found campaigning in a lacklustre manner. The BJP’s Bihar unit chief, CP Thakur, had stirred a hornet’s nest when he resigned just before the beginning of the campaign.Although he subsequently withdrew his resignation, reports suggest that his campaigning leaves much to be desired.

Another prominent BJP leader from the state, well-known actor-turned politician Shatrughan Sinha, is also missing from the scene.

Nevertheless, Prasad insisted there were no problems within the BJP. “All our leaders will campaign in the coming days,” he said.
