Congress on took a dig at Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav for his reported comment that the party will finish fourth if the EVMs are not tampered with, saying it was a reflection of the SP's nervousness.

"Every individual, or party, which has been nervous about losing has always been resoting to the excuse of EVM manipulation. Is this the reflection of the intrinsic nervousness, which seems to be characterising the Samajwadi Party," party spokesperson Manish Tewari asked.

He had been asked about Yadav's reported comments that if the EVMs machines are not tampered with, then the Congress will finish fourth.

Meanwhile, Tewari wondered why this issue is being raised when the last phase of polls is to take place in a few days.

Insisting that Yadav's comments reflect his party's nervousness, he reasoned "otherwise there should be a reason as to why question with regard to the efficacy of the EVM should be raised at the this stage, when the final phase of polling is left to be completed in UP."

Yadav is reported to have made the remarks on campaign trail.

However, Congress reacted cautiously when asked whether the party feels confident enough to accept that UP election results will certify UPA's popularity among the masses.

"Every time we go through a cycle of elections, there is a tendency to extrapolate it to national level. In certain senses of the word I don't think you can ever draw that fine distinction between what is probably state and what is probably national.

"But I think it's appropriate that any election result is evaluated in the context of the issues on which that election is fought. I think the appropriate time for evalution is once the results are out," Tewari said.

Asked about the party's assessment of its prospects, he said Congress has been able to measure up to the aspirations of people.

"I think both our campaign and our candidates have put up a splendid performance in terms of reaching out to the people and we do hope on the 6th of March, when results come in they measure up to our expectations," Tewari said insisting that people of the state want a change.
