Ahmedabad stands a chance to be placed on the world map today - and for a very enviable reason. A staggering 6.5 lakh saplings are expected to be planted in the city today, under the Swarnim Prakriti Mahotsav. And if every goes as per plan, Ahmedabad might as well be the only city in the world to have planted such a large number of saplings in a day.

Around 26,000 people are expected to participate in this record-breaking event, which is being supported by around 2,000 people.

The forest department, which has planned the plantation, is also considering sending reports of the tree plantation drive to the Guinness book of world records and the Limca book of records.

The 6.5 lakh saplings will be planted in AMC as well as Auda areas on Saturday, with Gujarat legislative assembly speaker Ashok Bhatt planting a sapling at Dudheswar, followed by the official inauguration of the plantation drive by chief minister Narendra Modi at the GMDC ground.

As per the plan, the AMC will plant around 3 lakh saplings, while the Auda is slated to plant around 3.5 lakh.

The AMC is all set to make the massive sapling plantation drive a successful affair - with all its associated organisations and the citizens having prepared pits to plant trees.

Chief conservator of forests, Jagdish Prasad, who was one of the main officials behind the planning and execution of the drive, said that looking at the enthusiasm among people, they also plan to increase the number of saplings. They will try to have 7.5 lakh saplings planted, in place of the stipulated 6.5 lakh. Deputy municipal commissioner for the parks and garden department, SK Langa, said that they are all geared up for the big day. "We have identified 105 independent sites for major plantation, and 321 others for plantation in smaller numbers. Two witnesses each will remain present at all of the spots, to keep a check on the proceedings," said Langa.

He said that to meet the demand for saplings, they have managed 70,000 saplings from Vadodara on Thursday, and distributed among the supporting organisations and citizens participating in the drive.
