The Ahmedabad municipal corporation (AMC) will have 63 more corporators and 21 new wards. The state election commission (SEC) is expected to make a formal announcement in this regard in a month’s time when the delimitation of wards in the six oldest municipal corporations of the state end. Once the changes are effected, the number of corporators in Ahmedabad will increase to 192, while the number of its wards will go up to 64.

Highly placed sources in the state government said that the government had initiated the process of delimitation of wards in the municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar. The delimitation exercise will not be undertaken in Junagadh as it became a municipal corporation much after the other six cities.

The sources said that the state urban development department has submitted a proposal for the delimitation of civic wards in the six cities, to the SEC. The department has proposed that the number of wards under the AMC be increased to 64 from 43, that of Surat municipal corporation to 38 from 33, and that of Jamnagar to 19 from 17.

For Vadodara, however, the department has proposed that its ward strength be reduced to 25 from 26. The number of wards in Bhavnagar and Rajkot corporations has not been changed, sources said.

“The state government has dropped the idea of one ward-one corporator,” a source said. “The current system of three corporators per ward will continue.’’

Prakash Shah, secretary to the SEC, told DNA that the commission had received the draft proposal from the state government.

“On its basis, we will start the process of delimitation as per our norms,” Shah said. “We will issue a preliminary draft and issue orders in this regard soon. The whole process might end in one month.”
