In an attempt to bring focus on population issues and the need to find solutions for them a seminar on 'Gender Equality for Sustainable Development' is being organised at the Science city to celebrate the World Population Day on Saturday.

The seminar will discuss the importance of adolescence and the psychosocial, emotional and biological changes that characterise this stage of life. About 100 participants, comprising adolescents, teachers, and parents will take part in the event.

Raj Kumar, secretary, department of science and technology will inaugurate the seminar.

"The seminar will be an ideal platform to understand and discuss what we know about gender equality as a prerequisite for sustainable development, and about the extent to which women live more sustainably than men, leave a smaller ecological footprint and cause less climate change" said Narottam Sahoo, senior scientist at science city.

Gujarat has a sex ratio of 883 girls per 1,000 boys as per the 2001 Census.  Despite such circumstances, some girls have emerged as winners.

Take the case of Kamani Binal Amrutlal, who has become the first girl from Gujarat to receive the prestigious Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) this year, given by the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana is an ongoing program started by the department of science and technology,  to encourage students of basic sciences, engineering and medicine to take up research careers in these areas.

"I was overwhelmed to realise that I was selected for this award. I had put in tremendous amount of hard work in it and the award was an honour" said Binal.

"A nation can only achieve progress if its women folk are allowed to grow and evolve with time through education,” she said.
