The 'absconding' squad of city police, formed to nab notorious criminals on the run, is serving its purpose. The squad, comprising one police officer and 13 constables, enumerated 500-600 gangsters and arrested 120 of them in five months. However, the future of this squad seems uncertain now as police sub-inspector VR Malhotra who was in charge of the squad till now has been promoted as inspector and will go to Bhuj on deputation.

The reins of this successful squad are currently in the hands of a head constable.

The squad, brainchild of former commissioner of police Sudhir Sinha, was formed to nab notorious criminals who are on the run. Under Malhotra, the squad nabbed many a gangster on the run.

"We arrested 120 gangsters in five months," said Malhotra on Monday. He has now been transferred to Bhuj as police inspector. A head constable is in charge of activities of the group now.  It now remains to be seen how successful this group will be without Malhotra heading it. Search is on for an able successor to the cop.
