It looks like the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has finally acknowledged the urgent need to tackle the dog menace prevailing in the city. After blacklisting the NGO that was looking into dog sterilisation, the civic body has now turned to the Animal Welfare Board (AWB) for guidance on how to control the dog population.

Municipal commissioner IP Gautam, on Tuesday, said that they have written a letter to the AWB. "We wish to know alternative ways of controlling the dog population in the city.

We do not have expertise in handling the issue, and so, we have sought the AWB's guidance in this matter. Also, two south Indian cities, whom we requested for help by studying their Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, have responded. We will soon start studying their model," said Gautam.

Gautam claimed that to have the exact number of dogs in the city, the AMC will soon start a dog census. "Currently, we do not know the exact number of dogs in the city. It creates a problem when we give away dog sterilisation work to some NGO. So, it is important to start this census before we start the ABC programme," said Gautam.

Meanwhile, the AMC doesn't seem to have started training its officials to catch dogs with nets, even after animal rights activist Lisa Warden took away iron tongs from the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD). Gautam, however, claimed that they have started the procedure. When asked to name the NGO helping with the task though, Gautam could not recollect the name.

"It is some local NGO, and its logo has a dog painted on it," is all that Gautam could recall. It should be noted that Warden’s act of taking away the iron tongs had given rise to a controversy with the AMC even filing a case against Warden. The police had apparently even questioned Warden’s colleagues and friends to know about her whereabouts.
