Around 40% of the total electricity consumption in the world takes place in buildings, if some studies on the subject are to be believed.

Moreover, electricity bill form a bulk of the expenditure for most of the people and corporations. Perhaps, this could explain why the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is mulling installing some cost-effective lights that are likely to reduce the civic body’s energy bills by 60%. This means that the taxes paid by the citizens will now be used more judiciously.

According to an estimate, the streetlights within the AMC limits consume energy worth Rs12 crore annually. This means around Rs1 crore a month is spent on energy bills for streetlights.

But if the new lights that the corporation is mulling to use holds true on its promise then the energy bills can come down to Rs40 lakh.

Muffaddal Darukhanawalla of Fedco India, a company involved in lighting design solutions said that the company is in talks with the corporation to install some induction lights on a trial basis in some areas of AMC.

“We will be installing the lights on a pilot project basis in the city. This is to see the compatibility and competitiveness of the product against the existing technology,” said Darukhanawalla.

Explaining further, he said that usually sodium lights are used by most people and induction lights can replace the former.

He said that a 40 watt induction lamp can serve the same purpose as that of a 150 watt sodium light. The additional chief engineer of AMC, AC Shah said that the civic body was considering two to three companies for replacing existing streetlights.

“The idea is to reduce the electricity bills and for this we are also considering solar lights along with induction lamps for installation,” said Shah.

Experts believe that the future of lighting is solar energy, ‘induction lamps’ and LED lights that save energy. They say it also helps preserve the environment and reduce light pollution.

Darukhanawalla said that even developers are considering LED and induction lamps to be used in their realty projects.

Director of Savvy Infrastructure Ltd, Jaxay Shah who is also into green buildings said “I think that the technology is good and can be used in our schemes.” Shah said it is cost effective in the long run for the end user and can also help in conserving energy.

Agreeing with Shah, GIHED president, Suresh Patel said “This kind of innovation helps reduce electricity bills. However it is important that the initial cost of installation is also taken into account.”

“Even solar lights are a better alternative. If they are cost effective vis-à-vis LEDs or induction lamps then one should go for them.”
