Police will collect information about all moneylenders active in several areas of Ahmedabad.
In the wake of increasing number of cases of harassment by moneylenders, city police are now all geared up to nab those involved in the business of lending money at high interest rates. In the recent past two cases of suicide had taken place in the city allegedly due to mental harassment caused by moneylenders.
After the alleged involvement of Vikram Rabari, a moneylender came to light in the suicide by one city-based sharebroker, Atul Shah, the deputy commissioner of police, zone I has begun an exercise of collecting information about all such moneylenders active in various areas of the city including Vejalpur, Satellite, Vastrapur, Navrangpura, Ghatlodia, and Sola.
According to Singh, any one found involved in the money laundering business without a license will be punished accordingly. "After going through the list, we will put aside the name of all the illegal moneylenders who lend money on exuberant interest rates," said Singh.
Before Atul Shah committed suicide, a city-based builder Pankaj Jadav too allegedly committed suicide inside his car by shooting himself. Police investigation revealed that both of them were victims of a trap. It was also learnt from Shah's family that Rabari used to threaten him asking to return his money.
However, due to huge interest rates charged by Rabari, Shah couldn't pay up the amount. Shah's family alleged that he ended his life because of constant harassment and torture by Rabari.
The police have now decided to put an end to this illegal business which, of late has becoming the cause of many deaths in the city.
After preparing the list, it will be checked if these money lenders have the required license or not. Police will also check if the business is carried out as per the government notification on moneylending.
