The city will indulge in double celebrations on Thursday. As Dev Diwali and Guru Nanak Jayanti fall on the same day, people have two reasons to decorate their homes and burst firecrackers.

Observed on the full-moon day of Kartik month, Dev Diwali is considered an important occasion for Gujarati people, which also marks the beginning of auspicious days according to the Gujarati calendar. Raju Bhatt, a priest, said, “It is believed that gods descend on Earth on this day to celebrate Diwali and hence it is called ‘Devo ni Diwali’ (Diwali of the Lords). Before this day, there were no auspicious dates for marriages, but this day marks the beginning of auspicious times.”

People celebrate this day by bursting firecrackers just like Diwali. This day marks the end of the fortnight of Diwali celebrations.

Sikh, Hindu and Sindhi devotees will throng gurudwaras in the city to mark Guru Nanak Jayanti. The gurudwaras will be decorated in a grand way for the occasion. Chairman of Gurudwara Govindham of Thaltej, Surjit Singh Bagga said, “This day is marked as the birth anniversary of our first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. The celebrations began 15 days ago.  We organised a prabhaat feri to each house for kirtan and carried out a huge procession recently.”

A special team of people has been called from Amritsar’s Golden Temple and Ludhiana. For kirtan, three people from Golden Temple have been invited. One of them is well-known Pal Balbir Singh Jatha. For katha, two people from Ludhiana as katha vachaks have been called who will enlighten the devotees on the life and history of our guru, Guru Nanak.”

The gurudwara will witness the arrival of devotees from 4 am on Thursday. A morning paath is scheduled, followed by kirtan and langar prasad (lunch).
