To identify issues related to the city's roads and to ensure their timely solution, a new 'Empowered Committee' has been formed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner. At the meeting of AMC and traffic department of the city held on Thursday, it was decided to create a new committee which will take care of road and traffic issues. The newly formed committee will be chaired by Deputy Commissioner of Police Nilesh Jajadia.

Speaking to DNA about the newly formed group, AMC Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, "The biggest problem we were facing was of co-ordination between AMC and the traffic department. But, with the formation of this committee, there will be smoother and more effective results and decisions. The committee will meet once a fortnight to discuss the city's traffic and road issues and to take action in the matter. The committee comprises four AMC officials and some key people from the traffic department. Members of other AMC committees will also be involved.

Presently, the city faces several urgent issues relating to roads and traffic. Many roads do not have proper signages, street lights, traffic signals and have sharp edged bumps etc which are a big nuisance for commuters. "To ensure things are implemented effectively, to focus on the areas where immediate attention is required, this committee has been formed," added Mohapatra.

The committee will work on removal of illegal encroachments on the roads, create parking facilities, identify various spots in the city for pay and park facilities, remove illegal/unauthorized parking etc. Also, the committee will address the issues of removing illegal bumps on the roads and creating standardized bumps, painting the road signages, installing proper signals etc. "Till now, we have been quite liberal with traffic signages, traffic signals etc. The committee will take up these issues seriously so that they can be addressed," added Mohapatra.
