Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to increase capacity of Jaspur water treatment plant to 400 million litre per day (MLD) from the present 275 MLD at the cost of Rs30 crore. The aim is to cater to the future water needs of the new west zone which includes posh localities such as Bodakdev, Satellite, Prahladnagar and Thaltej.

At present, the civic body supplies 200 MLD water to residential areas in the zone. Residents are heavily dependent on groundwater extracted using submersible pumps. "We want to provide drinking water from the Narmada Canal to the residents, so augmentation of treatment capacity is a must," said Jatin Patel, chairman of AMC's water supply and sewerage management committee.

Patel said that at present the civic body does not provide Narmada water to residential societies without a sump. Many societies are building a sump, so water needs are going to increase in the area. Moreover, there is scope for realty development which will increase the population and demand for water, added Patel.

At present, AMC has four water treatment plants in the city at Kotarpur, Jaspur, Dudheshwar and Raska with total capacity of 1260 MLD. However, the civic body utilises only 950 MLD per day treated water.

The proposal will be tabled at the meeting of the committee on Friday. The civic body will soon invite tenders for the project which is likely to be completed within 18 months from when the work order is given.
