Why do the police have to wait the whole day to register a complaint? If they act immediately, they can increase the chances of finding our kids, says K Rajendran, father of Kartik, 17, who has been missing for the last three months from his residence in Khokhra.

According to Rajendran, the police are not treating his 'missing' complaint seriously. "There must be a dedicated team of policemen to seek out all the kids missing from the city, which will only happen if the cops start taking the complaints seriously," said Rajendran, who is running from pillar to post to get some clues about his son.

Two weeks ago K. Rajendran received a call from Sanand Police informing him that they have found a boy who matches the profile of his son. However, when he tried to seek the help of the cops to get to the place where his son reportedly was, they bluntly refused to co-operate. "Finally, when I called 100, the policemen asked me to go to the spot by myself. If I have to do it on my own, then what is the use of the police?" asks Rajendran.

Similarly, many parents whose kids are missing are not happy with the investigation done by the police. According to Bharti Khmbhla, whose 15-year-old brother is missing since August 2010, the police have been giving excuses when parents try to make inquiries. "My brother Meram was living in Rajkot with my parents. After our parents' death, he started staying at my place in Paldi, from 2010. After he went missing, we filed a complaint at Ellisbridge police station, but the cops made me sit for hours without doing anything when I went there to inquire about my brother," said Bharti.

Like her, Bhagvatiben Vaishnav is also tired of the replies given by the police. Her daughter Dipal went missing in October 2011. "My daughter went for her exam and never returned home. We even filed a complaint at Navrangpura police, but, instead of even trying to find her, they asked me to inform them if we had found her ourselves! What is the use of the police if we have to do the job ourselves? asks Bhagvatiben.

According to Mukesh Patel, a resident of Satyamev Chhavni in Sughad village in Gandhinagar district, his 15-year-old son Sagar has been missing since December 20, 2011, but the local police refuse to even register a complaint in the matter.  "Forget about doing something to find him; they simply refused to register my complaint, saying that my son is in the habit of leaving home. It has been three months, but the police have done nothing to help me," alleges Patel, a businessman who has a chemical factory in Odhav.
