Apparently the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is showing an apathetic approach towards the dog menace in the city. Mayor Asit Vora responded to queries from the media about forming a policy regarding dog sterilisation in a casual manner. Also, the standing committee of AMC awarded the Bhadra revitalisation project contract to a dubious contractor, amid protests by the opposition Congress at its meeting on Thursday.

The opposition party members in the standing committee raised the issue of dog menace in the city and said that the civic body’s approach towards controlling it is careless. Even after signing an MoU with the Animal Welfare Board of India, no action has been taken in this regard so far.

Surendra Baxi, Congress member of the standing committee, said that it seems that the ruling party is not aware of dog biting cases registered in the city.

However, when queried about this, mayor Vora nonchalantly answered that they will form a policy for dog sterilisation soon.
“We will structure a policy in this regard within a month,” said Vora.

Talking about working with a non-government organisation (NGO) on the dog menace job, standing committee chairman Bhupendra Patel said that the NGO is now demanding that construction work on the site (where dogs will be kept) be allotted to them as they need to keep dogs for three days after sterilisation. “So it will take time”, said Patel.

The Congress also raised doubts about the capacity of the contractor with regard to completion of projects in time, but the ruling party brushed aside all their objections to the awarding of the contract of Bhadra Fort Revitalisation project to M/s MS Khurana Engineering.

Patel confidently said that the work will progress smoothly and any delay is unlikely. “We have served notices to the UCO Bank and the Women’s Police Station for evacuation,” said Patel.

Moreover, the standing committee also approved the proposal to set up 37 LED based traffic signals in the city at a cost of around Rs3.32 crore. When questions were raised about the high price of the signals, Patel said that the pricing had been fixed as per tender process so the civic body had to accept it.
