Alert citizens helped an autorickshaw driver nab a fake policeman near Ghatlodia on Saturday and handed him over to Naranpura police. On January 23, Alkesh Patel, 42, stopped an auto driver Bharat Dabhi, 21, near Nirnaynagar underbridge in Nava Vadaj at 7:45pm. Introducing himself as a police officer, Patel threatened to book Dabhi.

He snatched Dabhi's Motorola mobile phone and left from the spot. Since Patel's well-built body gave him the look of a policeman due, Dabhi did not protest and parted with his mobile phone.

At 11 am on Saturday, Dabhi, a resident of slums near Gandhi Ashram, once again spotted Patel near Nirnaynagar underbridge. Dabhi approached Patel in his auto and requested him to return the phone. An angry Patel told Dabhi that he was in D staff of Naranpura police and asked him to forget his phone.

Since Dabhi knew a policeman in D staff, he tried to call the D staff office of Naranpura police from his mobile phone. By that time, Patel, a resident of Shivam tenements, K K Nagar in Ghatlodia, realized that his fraud was about to be exposed, so he tried to flee from the spot. However, Dabhi shouted for help and gathered some commuters, who overpowered Patel. He was then handed over to Naranpura police. Patel admitted that he resorted to cheating by posing as policeman after losing his job recently. He lives with his father, mother, wife and 12-year-old son.
