Adding “brutality” to the failings of the “corrupt” UPA government, the Opposition on Wednesday demanded union home minister P Chidambaram’s sacking for the police action against BJP youth activists.

“Knowing him to be the arrogant person that he is, he would not step down. So the prime minister should sack him,” leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said as she detailed the police atrocities against the protesting BJP youth activists in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The BJP was joined in by the Samajwadi Party, the Shiv Sena and the Biju Janata Dal in raising this issue in both houses of parliament. They demanded the suspension of the question hour and led noisy protests forcing adjournment of both Houses for the day without transacting any business. The Shiv Sena’s protest was focused on the police firing in Pune.

Sushma Swaraj alleged that the action by the Delhi Police was initiated at the behest of Chidambaram. Leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said his party was against disproportionate use of force against protestors. He said that it has become a pattern for the government that either it does not grant permission to any organisation to hold protests against corruption or when a protest is staged it uses excessive force to crush it.
