Advocates strike work in Vadodara

Lawyers protested against the high professional tax imposed on them.

About 3,000 advocates of Vadodara city and district, stayed away from court proceddings on Monday to oppose the imposition of professional tax on the lawyers. The advocates protested aggressively at the Bhagatsingh statue near Vadodara court on Monday.  Professional tax imposed on advocates has irked the advocates of Vadodara city and district.

Professional tax of Rs150 was primarily imposed on the advocates, during the government of Jantadal about 15 years ago.

The tax was accepted by advocates, and it was raised to Rs250 after few years. Since then, advocates have been paying tax regularly, while the state government had already promised to abolish the professional tax before the assembly elections.

In recent times, the professional tax has been increased to Rs2,000. The advocates have received a notice from the VMC for the payment of professional taxes.

 With reference to this, the members of the Baroda Bar Association along with the bar associations of the district protested against the imposition of professional tax on Monday.
The advocates shouted slogans condemning the move of corporation for issuing the notices to advocates for paying the professional tax.

Talking to DNA, president Narendra Tiwari said, "The advocates will continue their strike even on Tuesday. We will now submit a memorandum to the mayor of the city and initiate aggressive agitation and appeal the other associations of the state to join us.”
