A teenaged girl suffered severe burns when a 28-year-old married man allegedly threw acid at her face in her north-west Delhi house, police said today.

The victim identified as Shivani (17), a class 10 student, was at her Ashok Vihar residence when Mahesh, her neighbour, walked into her house at around 2:30 pm yesterday and allegedly threw acid on her face.

After coming inside, Mahesh asked her mother to get him some water. "As she entered kitchen, Mahesh threw acid on Shivani's face and fled from the spot," a senior police official said.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital. She suffered 50% burns.

Mahesh was allegedly in love with the elder sister of the victim and used to stalk her. Her family had caught him passing lewd comment on the victim's sister. He was allegedly thrashed by the victim's father and elders of the neighbourhood.

"It appears that he was planning to retaliate for being humiliated," the official said.
