Mohammad Ajmeri Shaikh, arrested for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a minor girl in suburban Kurla, today underwent narco-analysis test at Nagpada police hospital in south Mumbai, police said today.

"We have conducted narco analysis test on Shaikh and it lasted for nearly two hours," a senior police official said on condition of anonymity.

He refused to divulge details such as how many questions were posed, how the accused reacted to the questions etc.

However, Shaikh's lawyer Prakash Wagh claimed that his client appeared very confident while answering the questions although he could not hear the questions posed at Shaikh.

"He did not hesitate to answer. The results of the test would be produced before Vikhroli court in a week time," Wagh told PTI.

Although granted bail, Shaikh has not been released as he has failed to furnish the directed surety for his bail.

The Vikhroli magistrate's court last week granted permission for the narco test but said it must be conducted in the lawyer's presence.

Ajmeri (29), an autorickshaw driver, was arrested on March 9 for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl, whose body was found on a terrace in the police quarters at Nehru Nagar.

On June 7, the magistrate had granted Ajmeri bail after the police failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90 days.

This is the second time the police sought permission for a narco test. Earlier the same court had denied permission. But after the accused told the court that he was ready to undergo any test to prove his innocence, the court had granted permission for the same.

In May, the Supreme Court of India had declared that narco test can be conducted only with the subject's consent. If investigators get anything out of such test, they can use that for further probe.
