If the embroidery skills of artisans from rural Gujarat have left you with an urge to know more about this very talented regional community, its artisans, its culture and handicraft - your thirst for knowledge is about to end.

The Self Employed Women's Association (Sewa) is coming up with a museum at Radhanpur in Banaskantha to enlighten visitors about the different traditions and craftworks of the region.
The museum is a result of Sewa's efforts to preserve and showcase the tradition and culture of the region - including its 19 types of exquisite embroidery.  The two-storey museum will have four sections.

The first section will display embroidered handicrafts and heirlooms with the history and legends associated with it, the second will have a live show where artisans will explain the nitty-gritty of the art of embroidery.

Another part will present case studies and the final part will house a library consisting books on handicraft, culture and community of Banaskantha.

Apart from displaying sample pieces based on new techniques, designs and color combinations prepared by master artisans associated with Sewa, the museum will also work as a sample bank that will let artisans deposit their work and acquire loan against it.

This will prevent artisans from selling their precious work at throw away prices when in need of money. The museum is being developed under the project Kamlasadan - The Handicraft Park - to be spread over two acre land at Radhanpur.

The park will house a production and workshop area equipped with machinery to generate employment for 15,000 artisans. "The production and workshop area will help in the growth of rural artisans by providing them an opportunity to hone their skills so as to match the international standards. The workshop area will also hold knowledge exchange programmes with organisations like NID and NIFT," said chairperson of Sewa Reema Nanavaty.

Sewa is also planning to organise package tours that will provide a complete experience of craft museum, local cuisine, cultural events and performances.
