You cruise comfortably along the four-lane road from Shyamal crossroads till near the Chimanbhai Patel bungalow, soaked in the luxury of driving on a congestion free road. The joy however, is short-lived, as the experience changes with a turn towards Manekbaug. The four-lane road gradually shrinks into a two-lane one even as you struggle to tackle the unprecedented onslaught of traffic pouring in from both sides.

Vehicular movement on this road has drastically increased after the development of the 100 feet road up to Prahaladnagar. Denizens living in the area complain that the road has become unsafe for pedestrians, children and senior citizens. It is also becoming more and more accident prone with every passing day.

Our reader Kiritbhai recently wrote to the DNA about this, bringing the residents’ and commuters’ concerns to the fore. “More than 180 vehicles pass over this particular stretch in ten minutes. It may be because of the road being narrow and the increasing number of vehicles plying on it. The two-lane road from near the Chimanbhai bungalow to Manekbaug needs to be converted into a four-lane one to make it safe,” said Kiritbhai.

A resident of Shyamal cross roads, Jagdish Naidu says traffic congestion at the end of the two-lane road towards Shyamal cross roads often becomes unbearable. “I have started avoiding the main road and instead, I take narrow lanes to reach home. The route becomes longer this way but it’s much safer,” he says.

When DNA contacted deputy municipal commissioner MS Modia to check if widening the road is on the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s agenda, he said they would need to confirm several things before taking any such action.

“We have to check the Town Planning scheme if it is implemented and also see if the land around is involved in any legal dispute. If it is private land we will need to acquire it. There are many details which we need to look into before we can comment on this issue,” said Modia.

When DNA contacted the traffic police officials, they said they were unaware of any such problems.
