A communal outbreak in Nagorivaad area of Shahpur again reminded Amdavadis about the fragility of the calm that prevails in their city. Clashes between members of two communities turned the area into a war zone and soon roads were littered with stones and glass pieces. A jeep was also set afire by the rioters in the clash that lasted for almost two to three hours. Police had to fire three rounds of tear gas to disperse the angry mob.

An incident of private firing in which a woman was injured was also reported. It was reported on Monday night that two people had succumbed to their injuries following the riots. When DNA tried to verify the same on Tuesday, the police could not confirm it. Sources said some shops were also set on fire and the cops had to turn the area into a police camp to quell the situation.

As many as 100 police officials were deputed to Nagorivaad as news of stone pelting between two communities at around 12 pm began pouring in. As the violence escalated, around 120 SRP personnel, 60 local police and 50 police personnel from other areas were also called.

"Five police inspectors and their teams have been deployed in the area and the situation is under control," deputy commissioner of police, Zone 2, SM Katara told DNA. Senior police inspector, Shahpur police station told DNA that three rounds of tear gas shells were fired while four people including an SRP jawan was injured in the scuffle. So far nobody is sure what triggered the riots. Sources said one of the injured had acid thrown on him.
Many in the locality believe that it is the handiwork of some political parties.

A member of the peace committee, Shahpur police station Shabbir Sheikh told DNA that some anti-social elements are being used by few local politicians to create unrest in the area. They also alleged that people from a specific community were being offered liquor to disturb peace in the area.

Residents believe that the riots are being orchestrated with an eye on the upcoming municipal elections. Incidents of violence were also reported late in the night but were soon brought under control.
