Nine professors of Sahjanand Arts and Commerce College on Thursday surrendered before the Satellite police after their anticipatory bail application was rejected by the sessions court.

Earlier, nine professors and a peon of the college were booked for rioting and damaging the college property. The group had applied for anticipatory bail which was rejected by the sessions court on Wednesday.

The bail was rejected following opposition by the police and the trust that runs the college.

Dr DG Gohil, one of the professors who surrendered, said that the new trust is eying the college property and wants to close it down.

"We have received a lot of support from the professors across the state and we will object to such moves of the college trust at every level," he said. HB Jamod, police inspector of Satellite police station said that the professors were arrested after they surrendered and where produced before the magistrate court.
"Soon after they were produced before the court and we applied for a bail, they were released on a cash surety of 5,000 each," said Minesh Vaghela, counsel for the professors.

"The professors have assured the court that they will co-operate with the investigation," Vaghela said. The professors are accused of instigating the students after which they went on the rampage breaking windows, furniture and damaging college property. The students also vandalised the principal's office.

The ruckus on June 8 came after a move by the college to close down the Gujarati medium division of BA.  The college later backed down from the decision following the intervention of Gujarat University. The Satellite police had registered a case on the basis of a complaint filed by the principal of the college, Jigar Patel.
