Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation celebrated 'Fire Safety Day' at the Memnagar Fire Station on Thursday where seven employees of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) were awarded the 'Mayor's Medal for exceptional service'.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation celebrated 'Fire Safety Day' at the Memnagar Fire Station on Thursday where seven employees of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) were awarded the 'Mayor's Medal for exceptional service'. These employees include firemen as well as drivers who have shown extraordinary courage and commitment towards their duty. Mayor Asit Vora also felicitated 31 other employees of AFES for courage and discipline during service. They were given cash awards as a token of appreciation.
Speaking on the occasion, additional chief fire officer Rajesh Bhatt gave details about the current strength of the AFES. "At present, we have 12 fire stations across the city and 160 fire safety vehicles to deal with any situation," he said.
Bhatt also said that new fire stations will be added in the near future at nine places in the city, including Aslali, Vasana, Makarba, Chandkheda, Thaltej and Gota.
Mayor Vora thanked the firemen for their commitment to duty. He promised to provide world-class facilities and training for them.
"Apart from acquiring the latest equipment, we are also planning to send firemen abroad for further training," he said. Vora also expressed concern about the welfare of the firemen and announced donation of Rs1 lakh to the firemen's welfare fund.
At the function, AFES firemen carried out a live demonstration to douse a large scale chemical fire. After setting a tanker on fire, the fire crew arrived with their fire-fighting equipment and doused the flames within minutes. A crowd of nearly 500 people witnessed the demonstration and cheered the firemen. Deputy mayor Darshna Vaghela, chairman of the standing committee Bhupendra Patel and BJP leader in AMC Gautam Shah were also present on the occasion.
