With a mission to help spread the green cover, the Gujarat University (GU) will take up a plantation programme on Saturday on the University exhibition hall. This initiative is part of the university's green drive.

Initially, 60,000 saplings will be planted in the campus, and there are also plans to convert the spot into a botanical garden.

Vice-chancellor of the GU, Dr Parimal Trivedi said, "The saplings have been chosen in such a way that medicinal plants, decorative plants as well as rare plants have been included.'' Dr Trivedi said, adding that this educational area will be helpful to students, especially those pursuing botany and environmental sciences.

He said that once the garden is set up, it will be the responsibility of the students of these departments to maintain the botanical garden.

He added that this initiative was part of the university's efforts to keep the campus green and clean. "Apart from building and infrastructural development, maintaining greenery on the campus was one of the initiatives that the university had initiated in the main campus area. This will now spread to accommodate other areas of the university as well,'' said the V-C.

He said that the first sapling in this exhibition hall area would be planted by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, and there will be other educationists also, who will participate in the university's green drive.
