The voting for student senate and student welfare elections of Gujarat University passed off peaceful with around 55% turnout. There were 50 candidates in the fray for the eight seats of student senate and 10 seats of student welfare. The voting was conducted at five polling booths in the city and 52 in the rural areas. Around 2,000 voters had registered for the polls.
It should be noted that two candidates belonging to National Students Union of India (NSUI) itself had contested for each of the undergraduate and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) categories, thereby causing some internal dispute.
Moreover, students also faced problems as some banking exams and exams of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) were also conducted simultaneously.
Of the total 22 seats, candidates in four seats of medical and dental categories were declared winners unopposed. Both student organizations - Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and NSUI have claimed the winners in these categories.
The results of the elections will be declared on February 15, 2011.
