The Amraiwadi police came down heavily on drunkards participating in the Lord Ganesha visarjan (immersion) procession on Sunday. The police arrested 55 people in inebriated condition from the procession.

Police inspector Shaktisinh Parmar said 55 people were found under the influence of alcohol and were caught from various places including Khokhra, Hatkeshwar and Bhaipura, etc. He said it was a strategic move to keep the troublemakers at bay during the procession.

“Amraiwadi area is known for carrying out visarjans till late night in the city. And every year, some or the other nuisance was reported in the area during the procession. So, this time we formed squads and picked up all drunkards from the procession since they are the one who delay the visarjan,” Parmar said.

He said this time the procession concluded by 7:30pm, earlier it used to end not before midnight. Further, the police zeroed in on 90 bootleggers on Sunday to stop the flow of liquor completely.
Further, the police didn’t allow music by DJs during the procession in Amraiwadi area and detained those who were found flouting the norm. Besides, police also didn’t permit Jagan ‘Madrassi’ of Amraiwadi to take out a procession as he used to reportedly delay the procession every year.
