So far they have waged a war against illiteracy and ignorance. But soon school principals will be opening a new battlefront - that for the fight against terror. They will soon be trained by the state's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in identifying suspicious activities in and around the school and in managing and reacting to panic situations.

Following recent terror threats, as many as 500 principals of municipal schools in the city have been called by the Ahmedabad police to attend a training workshop on Sunday. An email, allegedly sent by terrorist organisations, had warned of 'cruel' terror attacks on schools in the city.

Apart from this, the local police will also conduct meetings with other school principals, including private schools, in their localities. The ATS and the special branch of the police commissioner's office will organise the meetings on Sunday and Monday.

The police have also made efforts to spread awareness among city schools about the terror threat. The ATS has been specially assigned the responsibility of handling the campaign. "We have asked them to hold meetings about the terror alert in different locations of the city," ATS chief, Manoj Shashidharan, told DNA.

Apart from the ATS, the special branch of the police commissioner's office is also busy organising meetings with school principals.

"All police stations have been asked to conduct meetings with principals and the administrative staff of schools in their respective jurisdictions," said joint commissioner of police, special branch, Shamsher Singh. He said that the local police have already started meetings with principals in their respective jurisdictions.

Singh said that two different meetings will be conducted with two groups of principals of the municipal schools. "The meeting is about countering terrorism, and the precautionary measures that need to be taken for the same. We want each and every individual to be aware of the terror threat," Singh said.

Commissioner of police, Ahmedabad city, Sudhir Sinha said the meeting will be one-of-its-kind. "We don't want to take any chances and want the school authorities to keep tabs on all suspicious activities in their school," he said. He said that schools should questions strangers about their identity, bar them from bringing tiffins, and keep an eye on the parking lot for suspicious activity.
