A Dalit woman and her four daughters were burnt to death and their charred bodies were found early this morning in Behanganpurwa village, nearly 70km from the district headquarters, police said.

The victims were set afire after sprinkling kerosene, Dhaurehra police station in-charge Yogendra Singh said.

One of the daughters was a 23-day-old infant, while others were below the age of eight.

Police is investigating the role of Ramanand, the woman's husband, and have taken him to custody.

Ramanand had recently climbed a tower and kept the police on tenterhooks for several hours, threatening them of committing suicide if he was not allowed to meet the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.
