Sardarnagar police officials' slumber was broken on Sunday morning when three notorious thieves lodged in their lock-up were missing. The trio identified as Prakash Bhil, Ramesh

Thakore and Deepak Golani had been nabbed by the Kalol police in connection with several incidents of stolen vehicles in the area. The police said the men utilised the dilapidated station building to their advantage and broke the disintegrating ventilators of the lock up to escape to freedom. The ventilators had wooden bars, most of which were past their prime a long time ago.

The three men were found missing at around 7.25 in the morning.

Interestingly, the cops at the police station claim the trio, all residents of Hansol, had been soundly sleeping in their lock up until 3 in the morning. Police believe that they broke out between 3 and 7 am. The men managed to escape despite there being 10 cops at the police station till 3 am.

Police said Bhil and Thakore were notorious thieves and chain snatchers and had been to jail several times. The three were nabbed by the Kalol police a few weeks back, after they went there to sell some of the stolen vehicles. They were then sent to Sabarmati jail.

Since they had also been active in Sardarnagar area, the Sardarnagar police had brought them on a transfer warrant to interrogate them. They were brought to Sardarnagar police station at around 8 pm on Saturday.

Police inspector of Sardarnagar police station BS Solanki said that the building is quite old and the ventilators are made up of wood all of which are dilapidated. "It would be very easy for anyone to break the wooden bars of the venitlator. Moreover, the PSO's table is placed away from the lock up and hence they did not realise when the three broke out," said Solanki.
