The standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to recycle waste water and reuse it. It has given in-principle approval to hand over three sewerage water treatment plants located at Vasna, Pirana and Vinzol to three private companies - Essel Infrastructure, Jindal Manila Water Development Company and Doshion Ltd for the project.

The trio of private companies was short-listed from a total of 11 companies that had signed MoU with the civic body during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit 2011 in January.

The civic body plans to recycle sewerage water and reuse it for industry and other purposes. The three companies have given in-principle approval for setting up recycle plants at sewerage treatment plants at the three locations in the city.

On the basis of the in-principle approvals, the companies will now prepare a draft of agreement. AMC sources said, “Companies will now present an agreement format to us and based on the terms and conditions put forward by the companies, we will draft a common agreement.”

A highly-placed AMC official though added a word of caution, “The civic body needs to take into consideration revenue model of the companies as well as the cost of water recycling before taking a final call. The eventual decision regarding which company should be given the project will depend on the terms and conditions of agreement and the revenue that it will be able to generate.”

According to AMC, in the MoU, Essel Infrastructure has proposed to invest around Rs600 crore while generating employment for around 100 people while Doshion Ltd has envisaged investment worth Rs450 crore apart from promising employment to 150 people.

The MoU further mentions that Jindal Manila Water Development Company has proposed investment worth Rs175 crore apart from promising jobs to 200 people.
