Wedding celebrations turned into a nightmare for Dinesh and Ishwar Purbiya, safai kamdars with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday. What started as a memorable day for them — marriage ceremony of their daughters — later became horrific in the evening.

The Purabiya brothers hosted around 1,500 guests, of whom 250 suffered food poisoning after enjoying the delicacies at the ceremony. They were admitted to VS hospital and the AMC-run hospital for contagious diseases at Jamalpur. While 111 patients were admitted to the two AMC-run hospitals, the others were treated at private hospitals.

The Purbiyas had invited around 1,500 people to attend the marriage function of their daughters Priya and Vanita at Dalal Hall in Paldi on Tuesday.

It was suspected that either mango juice or dudhi halwa was source of food poisoning. However, some also suspect cottage cheese (paneer) used in subji could be the source.

Meanwhile, the AMC health department swung into action to seal the shops that supplied mawa and mango juice. The Purbiyas had placed order with Ambica Parlour in Jamalpur for supplying mango juice and Kaniyalla Mavawala in Kalupur for mava.

As soon as some guests started vomiting in the afternoon, they started calling each other as they suspected that the delicacies could have led to food poisoning.

The patients were rushed to the nearby hospitals by '108' ambulances as well as private vehicles. The medical staff at VS hospital swung into action.

However, commotion ruled the casualty ward as the patients were flowing in every minute. Around 50 female patients were admitted to the female ward, while 20-25 children were shifted to the paediatric ward from the casualty ward.

"Of total patients, around 20% were children," said sources in the hospital.

Dr Jitendra Parmar, CMO of VS hospital, said that 91 patients had been hospitalised at VS hospital and their condition was stable. Another 20 were admitted  to Jamalpur hospital. Mayor Asit Vora and municipal commissioner IP Gautam visited VS hospital and issued necessary instruction to the staff.
