Two young girls from the city studying pharmacy at Khambat in Anand district committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon by jumping into the Sabarmati river from Gandhi bridge here. They were identified as Megha Dave (19) and Anamika Patel (19).

While Mehga, a resident of Angita society in Naranpura, was doing her bachelors in pharmacy, Anamika, a resident of Haridarshan society at CTM, was pursuing diploma in pharmacy. They were students of SNDT College for Girls, Khambat.

According to Navrangpura police, both the girls had scored poor marks in their pharmacy exam and that may be the reason why they took the extreme step. The results for the exams were out a couple of days back. While Megha secured 46 per cent, Anamika scored 42 per cent. The two girls were very depressed after the poor results.

On Wednesday morning, the girls told their parents that they were going to LD Engineering College. Anamika left her house at 9:30 am and reached Megha's residence. They then headed towards Gandhi bridge from where they jumped into the river. Megha died on the spot while Anamika died at VS hospital where she was rushed in a '108' ambulance.

Megha's father Kanhaiyala, who works at the Speed Post centre near Income Tax circle on Ashram Road, told police that he had received a call from a friend of his daughter informing him about the incident. Until then, the parents were under the impression that the girls were at LD Engineering College. "The place where I work is close to Gandhi bridge, so I rushed to the spot," said Kanhaiyalal.

The Navrangpura police are investigating the case further. Sub inspector MJ Desai, who is investigating the case, said: "We have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the case."
