They say God is omnipresent. And you would agree to this when you learn about the data of a survey conducted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to check the number of religious structures standing on city roads. Shocking it may sound, but there are 1648 religious structures in the city which is spread over 466 sq km.

After the recent instructions from the supreme court, the AMC conducted a survey to check the number of religious structures constructed on city roads. They found around 1648 religious structures — temple, deri and dargah constructed in the middle of the road, which can be termed as encroachments.

Of the total such constructions, central zone has a majority of religious encroachment — 397 temples, deri and dargah on roads. This is followed by south zone with 324 such structures and 309 in north zone. Incidentally, new west zone which was recently merged in AMC limits has the lowest such structures at 156.

The break-up of the total number of religious encroachments suggests that maximum number of religious structures on roads is of temples — with 279 (temples of 309 total religious structures) in north zone.

AMC officials have submitted details to the district collector's office. Collector Harit Shukla told DNA that they have asked all civic bodies to prepare a list of religious encroachments. "We are also preparing the list of religious structures on the roads. After compiling the data we will send it to the state government," said Shukla, who added that as per the SC guideline they are also supposed to come up with a policy to decide what to do about existing religious structures on roads.

The AMC officials say, while the final decision about dealing with such structures is pending in the SC their duty is to ensure that number of religious encroachment do not exceed the number found. "If we find religious encroachments apart from these we can demolish them. In short, we have to keep a tab on it so that no new religious structure comes up on the roads," said a senior AMC official.
