100 cases settled by mediation centres in two months in Delhi

As many as hundred cases, some of them pending for several years in various courts, have been settled in the last two months by the mediation centres set up the Delhi government.

The cases were settled in three mediation centres at Vikas Bhavan in ITO, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, and Udyog Sadan in Trans Yamuna area.

The centres were set up to help parties resolve their disputes amicably, economically and quickly and ease pressure on city courts, which are reeling under the burden of over 12 lakh cases.

The mediation centres, which became functional two months back, are run by by Delhi Dispute Resolution Society (DDRS) in collaboration with the law department of the Delhi government.

Officials said on an average, the mediation centres took less than 30 minutes to settle a single case.

The DDRS has decided to launch a sustained awareness campaign to educate and inform people about the centres and the kind of cases that are settled.

Pre-litigation disputes like employment-related malpractices, problems in workplaces, property cases, cases relating to accidental compensation and dishonour of cheques are taken up by the mediation centres.

Post-litigation cases, including cases of consumer courts, family disputes and land-related cases, are also taken up by such centres.
