The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh decided to implement Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme for two years in the state instead of one and made "e-tendering" mandatory for all government contracts.

In its third Cabinet meeting, the Yogi government's decisions revolved around agriculture sector to project its image as pro-farmer. The Cabinet also approved new names of Agra and Gorakhpur Airports. They will now be known as Deen Dayal Updhyaya and Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airports respectively.

Srikant Sharma, UP government spokesperson, said that ever since the BJP government came to the power last month on March 19, it has taken several decisions to benefit farmers and boost agriculture sector.

The PM Crop Insurance Scheme will now be implemented for two years instead of one year to reduce the premium burden on farmers. To make it successful and ensure that insurance companies no longer cheat farmers, the Yogi government has decided to divide state into 12 clusters with five to eight districts in each cluster.

Under the scheme, a farmer will pay only 1.5 to 2 per cent of the total premium and the remaining will be paid by the government. The insurance scheme will now be available on all crops for the benefit of farmers. Agriculture department officials and all District Magistrates have been directed to ensure that majority of farmers go for insurance of every crop they sow.

"One insurance company will be given only two clusters to provide level playing field and ensure that farmers get proper insurance cover and compensation in time in case of crop damage," said Sharma.

To tighten noose around insurance companies, the UP government has also decided to issue directions for making payments within 21 days. "Insurance companies will be penalised and blacklisted if they fail to make the payment within the stipulated time of 21 days," he added.

The government targets to increase number of crop insurance beneficiaries from current 36 lakhs to 50 lakhs this year. The Cabinet also approved to open 20 more agriculture research centres in the state and extended organic farming pilots projects in many more districts to encourage cash crops, banana, and pepper growers.

Sharma claimed that 36 per cent sugarcane dues have been paid and the government has ensured 87 per cent payment of sugarcane farmers in the current crushing season.

Dr Siddharth Nath Singh, another spokesperson, said that the Cabinet has made e-tendering mandatory for all government contracts. "No projects will be sanctioned without e-tendering. It will not only provide level playing field but also ensure transparency," he said.

In addition, State Handicapped Welfare Department has been renamed to Divyang People Empowerment Department. The government has also made 'Ek Raani Aisi Bhi' tax-free in the state. The film is based on late Vijaya Raje Scindia, former Rajmata of Gwalior.
